Aromatherapy 101: The Power of Scent

Small Drops. Remarkable Botanicals.

Aromatherapy brings aromatic plant materials into personal scent rituals. A bright citrus note, a soft floral aroma or an earthy blend can become part of a moment you set aside for yourself. Scent preferences and experiences are personal: choose what you enjoy, without expecting an essential oil to treat a health condition.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials obtained from plants, including flowers, leaves, peels and wood. They contribute distinctive scent profiles to many finished products. They are different from the richer carrier oils used as a base in many facial and body oils.

Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils

Essential oils originate from plant materials, while fragrance oils may contain natural or synthetic aromatic ingredients. Neither “natural” nor a strong scent establishes that a product is suitable for your skin. Read the full ingredient list and choose a formula intended for the way you plan to use it.

How Extraction Shapes the Material

Extraction methods vary by plant and material. Distillation and expression are among the methods used for essential oils; other aromatic extracts may be obtained differently. “Cold-pressed,” “unrefined” and “extra virgin” are not interchangeable descriptions for every botanical oil. Look to the individual ingredient or product information rather than applying one temperature or extraction rule to all oils.

Scent in Your Skincare Ritual

In a finished skincare product, aromatic ingredients can contribute to the sensory experience. The complete formula, its concentration and its intended use matter more than a promise about a single ingredient. Essential oils are not substitutes for acne treatment, wound care or care for other medical concerns. Botanical ingredients can also irritate sensitive skin.

Make the Ritual Your Own

Choose a scent profile that appeals to you: fresh, floral, herbal, woody or earthy. Pair a product's intended use with a quiet pause, a journal entry or the transition into your evening. A meaningful ritual does not need a strong scent or several products layered together.

What Makes an Essential Oil a Thoughtful Choice?

Look beyond labels such as “aromatherapy” or “therapeutic” and ask what you can learn about the oil itself. Consider its botanical identity, the plant part used, how it was extracted and the sourcing information available. Clear ingredient lists and directions are more useful than a broad promise of quality.

Choose an oil or finished blend for its intended use and your own preferences and sensitivities. Where organic or fair-trade certification is claimed, look for supporting certification details rather than assuming those qualities from a grade name. A scent can enrich a personal ritual without needing a promise to heal or treat a condition.

Use Thoughtfully

Natural ingredients can still cause allergic reactions or irritation. Follow each product's directions, warnings and any patch-test guidance, and stop use if irritation occurs. Keep products away from eyes and out of reach of children. Do not ingest essential oils. Concentrated oils and finished skincare products are not interchangeable.

Only use a product on skin, in a diffuser or as a room spray when its directions specify that use. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a health condition or choosing a product for a child, seek product-specific advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Ask a veterinarian about use around pets.
