OILS OR MOISTURIZER? Which is Better and Why?
Today consumers are bombarded with advertisements promoting many different concepts and a popular one today is the notion that a skincare regimen based on Beauty Oils is the preferred way to achieve a healthy, glowing skin. So which is better and why?
First we must understand that both moisturizers and oils offer tremendous benefits to the achievement of healthy skin. The difference is their formulation and purpose. This is a post regarding Carrier Oils; Essential Oils should never be applied directly to the skin and are excluded from this discussion.
Oils are not a moisturizer ! Moisturizers have three important characteristics as you can see in my table:
OCCLUSIVE |
HUMECTANT |
EMOLLIENT |
Create a Protective Layer on top |
Draw Moisture from Air |
Fill in gaps between cells |
Prevent waterloss & seal in moisture |
Draw water from the derm layer to the epidermis layer |
Replace lipids & if applied heavily can act as an occlusive |
Example: Petroleum Jelly |
Glycerin |
Rose-hip Seed Oil |
Mineral Oils |
Pantheol Aloe Vera Juice |
Jojoba Oil Hemp Oil |
HOW TO USE YOUR OILS
• Apply in the evening when your skin needs it the most and will benefit during sleep• Avoid applying in the morning since oils interfere with Sunscreen absorption
• DO NOT APPLY TO DRY SKIN - apply to moist wet skin or use a hydrator first such as a moisturizer
• Can add 1-2 drops of oil to your moisturizer and massage into your skin
• If applying an Oil Treatment such as Vitamin C Serum then apply this treatment to the skin and follow with a moisturizer or a Sunscreen – the treatment needs time to absorb
USE OILS FOR A PURPOSE – these are not essential oils
Hyper- Pigmentation - apply oil products high in linolenic acid or alpha linolenic acid since these acids inhibit pigmentation formation. Linolenic acid is also beneficial for Acne since acne skin is usually low in linolenic acid. Some examples are Hemp Oil, Grapeseed Oil (balances & reduces inflammation), and Sunflower Oil which moisturizes and helps to even skin tone.
Anti-Aging – 100% pure organic plant oils are recommended such as Rosehip Seed Oil, Sea Buckhorn Oil, Hemp oils; oils such as Borage, Argan and Squalane are heavier oils on the skin. Ensure the label indicates that the oil was cold pressed and is Authentic.
Rosehip Seed Oil is an ideal anti-aging oil since it contains Vitamins A, C & E – it provides hydration, reduces redness, inflammation, lines and promotes healthy skin. Vitamin A turns over cells, C smooths and builds collagen and E increases hydration and elasticity. Combined with Sea Buckhorm oil is an ideal superior skin glow oil. Februarius Purity | Beauty offers a superior Beauty Glow Oil with Rosehip Seed Oil & Sea Buckhorn Oil derived from organic sources.
VARIETY - is important to try different oils since there are different benefits derived from various plant oils.
DO NOT EVER APPLY OIL THAT SMELLS BAD – it is most likely Rancid – oils exposed to air or excessive sunlight / moisture speeds up the oxidation process of the oil turning it rancid early – always place stopper back into your jar immediately and close the lid.
